Nose jobs

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

I've got a little cold and a big deadline, so I'm keeping it short today.  Warning: this ad is mildly offensive (or rather, it would be offensive if it was written today; as it is, it is just a reminder of the fact that some of this country's history is not pretty).  However, it really caught my eye and I thought it worth sharing.

Keep your noses all together, for in the multitude of advisers there is wisdom (or confusion).  Undoubtedly the wise see, realize and enjoy much that is unknown to the less favored.  The old darkey thought a hog the happiest creature of earth, as he manifested the most enjoyment.  "Where ignorance is bliss, it's folly to be wise." A-----A. Herald Uptown.

Huh.  The part about the "darkey" is what's unpleasant, obviously.  At the same time, I can see the point: maybe a pig is the happiest of creatures.  Who wouldn't enjoy rolling around in mud all day?  Don't answer that.

Okay, that's all totally besides the point.  The point is...WTF?  Starting at the end, the quote "Where ignorance is bliss, it's folly to be wise," is a quotation from a poem by Thomas Gray, and the line is actually "'tis folly," not "it's folly," but whatever, close enough.  So that explains that, but what about the rest of the ad?  What on earth is going on here?  It literally makes no sense.  Keep your noses together because with lots of advisers you're either going to gain knowledge or become confused.  Smart people probably have enjoyment the rest of us don't.  But (or at least, there should be a "but") ignorance is bliss.  And then an address.

What does "keep your noses together" mean?  I know the expression "put your heads together," like thinking things through with another person or people.  But noses?  That doesn't make any sense.  Maybe it's just supposed to mean stay close to each other.  But who is this person talking to?  What is this warning for - I can only assume it's a warning of some kind.  And since he or she finishes with an address, I can only assume they want some kind of response.

Curiouser and curiouser.

I have no answers, but meanwhile I'm in sore need of a nap.  Colds are not fun.  But anyone who wants to hazard a guess on the meaning of this ad, please feel free!  It's got to be a code for something...I just have no idea what!

It's probably a really simple cipher, but one needs the key or a code breaker...I don't have either...I think I'll have to torture a few people with this one though.

Hope you feel better soon. Being sick is rubbish!

I agree that it's got to be a cipher. Otherwise, makes NO sense!
