I didn't really have anything in particular I wanted to write about today so after some browsing around I ran across these two and figured they're interesting enough to speak for themselves!
Sallie C. - Yours 6th just received. So happy to hear from you. How could I think you unloving or doubt your constancy under any circumstances? I approve your determination and even advise you further, should they determine to send you away, refuse to go. Boldly state your reasons why. If they will not yield, then come to me. Yours ever and always, One Hundred.
Sallie C. - Oh, how anxiously I have been looking for a visit from you. All the children will go Monday. Will not be at the office until Tuesday. Hope I will see you. My darling, do try and communicate with me if you cannot come. Yours, with every expression of love. One Hundred.
So, Sallie and "One Hundred" (maybe his real name is Benjamin? As in the one hundred dollar bill?) are a nice young couple. One Hundred is a clerk at some office, not making a whole lot of money yet - probably quite young and, clearly, very romantic. Sallie is, I don't know, some charming fair thing (blonde hair? Ringlet curls?) with whom One Hundred has fallen fathoms deep in love, but whose parents have bigger plans for her than some lowly clerk. They have strictly forbidden her to see anything of her besotted swain.
Therefore, they must turn to the personals to communicate and make plans. Of course it's hard; poor One Hundred is constantly afraid that Sallie will acquiesce to her parents' wishes, or grow tired of him. But, she loves him too, and they are even seriously considering elopement!! Ye gads!
Er, that's as far as I can get. Like, who are the children? Maybe One Hundred gets his pseudonym not from Benjamin but because he's part of a big brood of kids and he's like one out of a hundred, ha ha? So he's still living with his family, the rest of his siblings back to school on Monday (this ad was printed on a Sunday) and he'll have the house to himself? She can drop by without detection? That's pretty risque! What are Sallie and One Hundred up to while the kids are off at school?
Anyway, no other personals appear (that I've found) between Sallie and One Hundred. I like to think it's because they defeated the odds, stood up to her parents, and that love conquered all. They no longer needed the personals because they lived Happily Ever After. But of course it's just as likely (and given the track record of couples in the personals, more likely) that her parents succeeded in sending her away and the two were parted, like star-cross'd lovers. One Hundred's heart was surely broken, but he was probably a very susceptible youth, and I wouldn't be surprised if one day he met some other fair maiden with whom he became equally infatuated.
