To the most elegant lady in the world -- Too serious in the corridor of the first story. Your smartness fascinates me. I don't doubt that you have understood my feelings and I hope you will prove it to me by changing the color of your handkerchief's hem and showing it to me to-morrow Saturday, at 9 A.M. DOUREDA
So charming! I would love it if someone wrote this to me!! Well, assuming it was someone I liked. How mysterious! How risqué! So, I think these two know each other, but clearly they aren't supposed to, so this is like some little secret, blossoming romance. Is this how all of these romances I study began? By changing the color of the handkerchief? I wonder if they live in the same building - that might explain the reference to the "first story"; and where else would they both be on Saturday morning at 9am? Or, maybe, they live in adjacent townhouses and he sees her in the window of the first story every morning. Hmmmm.....I like that even better.
Favorite part though? "Your smartness fascinates me." Although, it might not mean what I want it to. At first I thought, of course, her intelligence. But "smart" can also mean neat and well-dressed. Given that he also calls her elegant, I think that might be what he's talking about. Oh well. I'm going to pretend in my head that he's just blown away by how brilliant she is. I make everything else up here anyway.
